The Long and Winding Road

The Beatles tune The Long and Winding Road has been playing in my head as of late….

The long and winding road that leads to your door

Will never disappear

I’ve seen that road before it always leads me here

Leads me to your door

As I mentioned in a previous post we have spent the first quarter of 2016 in northern Illinois. Back to our roots, where our love story began as kids all the while staying in a “sticks and brick” house. Our Mobile Condo tucked safely in storage for a winter slumber.

As Spring sprang our snail mail box filled with announcements of graduations and weddings. It was time to pull the Mobile Condo out of storage, trade our “land legs” for “wheel legs” and take the long and winding road back towards our “other” home area of 30 plus years to join our families and friends for celebrations! So off we headed to the middle of the U S of A

The old adage “it’s just like riding a bike” was also playing in our heads as we loaded up the Mobile Condo with all of our belongings. We sure hoped getting back on the road with our circus train was as familiar as riding a bike. To say we were a bit cautious was not an understatement. We are are team and we checked and cross checked each other to ensure we had not forgot any major or minor detail that could change our next wonderful adventure into a nightmare. All systems were go so off we went heading south and west. First stop Missouri!

Since 1979 we have made the trek from Missouri and Kansas to Illinois at least once a year or more so the drive was VERY  familiar. It hasn’t changed one bit. It is still as flat as ever. My handsome Chauffer as you know often likes to take the road less traveled, but in this case because we have traveled it so many times and the scenery would not be any more scenic he decided to get this show on the road taking the Interstate.

The nearer you get to the Chicagoland area, the Interstate is covered with Toll booths. Unbeknownst to us they had added a new toll. It has not been there the last time we came this route. This booth was not manned! RUTRO!! There was a sign above that told us the toll was $1.50 EXACT CHANGE. We are certain that this fee is for cars NOT Circus trains that have 5 axels! We have no choice but to go through this as we cannot back up! Soooo we begin to rifle through our change and come up with the said amount.  My handsome Chauffer opens his window to drop the coins into the basket which happens to be at least 8 feet down. He tells his trusty side kick “I don’t think it’s a good idea tossing the coins I may miss.” “You better hop out and put it in.” Out I go. My handsome and oh so smart Chauffer then yells to me out the window “We need to time this. When you drop the cash I am going to gun it and get through the gate because we are only paying for 2 axels the gate may crash down on the back of the RV and or truck. At the count of three I toss the coins he flies through the gate! I begin running behind to catch him. I felt like I was in an old movie or Lone Ranger show when the character hops onto a moving train! Whew we made it!! We would settle with the state of Illinois via the Internet to pay them what we owed them later. My fingers were crossed that the next booth was manned! Sure enough it is manned. Our toll for the Circus Train is $15.00!!!  If the cost wasn’t bad enough the road was Filled with potholes, orange cones and road construction speed limits for MILES! My driver was LIVID! We pay to drive this road and it’s the WORST ever! Note to self we will NOT be taking toll roads on our return!

Road construction slowed our travel even more than usual. My driver was tired so I start the search for lodging for the evening. Using my trusty app I found we were coming upon a casino that also has accommodations for RVs. Neither of us have ever gotten bit by the gambling bug. Don’t get me wrong we have plenty of other vices, but gambling isn’t one of them. Sure enough, they had spots to suit our needs for the evening. We parked and the meandered into the Casino for a bite to eat. Low and behold when we registered they gave us $5.00 to gamble “on them”! WOO HOO … Let’s give our luck a try. We walk into the gaming area and we both looked like fish out of water. The lights flashing, dinging of bells and people made me want to run…. We stopped at a machine and in less than 30 seconds our five bucks was gone! We got that “out of our system” and headed home. Can’t say we didn’t try!😊

Up and on the road south to Kansas City bright and early as we had special cargo to retrieve from the airport. Our kids were joining us… Our nest would be full in a few short hours!

It had been way to long since we were all together let alone camping all together. We have had plenty of CrAzY experiences camping when we were only a family of four. Now we are a family of six and it would be our little grandson’s first of hopefully many adventures in the future.

There is a saying in the full time RV circles in regards to guests. “Your RV should be large enough to have cocktails for six, dinner for four, but sleeps only two.”😜 We would be pushing our limits providing   sleeping accommodations for five adults and a toddler in a crib! We were packed tight but all got a wee bit of shut eye, with the exception of our new little camper… He was TOO excited to sleep. After all the lil guy LOVES being outside and it was beckoning him to go out and play as soon as the birds started to chirp. Thank goodness for beautiful weather and COFFEE…. We had some adventures to participate in and our pint sized fella was now the leader of our pack.

Good morning kisses to his friend the Jayhawk

Fishing with his very best friend ….Pops!

We had gathered here to celebrate our nephew’s graduation

which included a visit with our loving extended family.

He was one tired out lil fella!

We all had so much fun!!!!

The wheels of the bus traveled further down the winding road to yet another celebration. We got to be a part of our extended family’s picturesque outdoor wedding in Kansas. On a beautiful day we got to witness our very dear friend/brother preform the marriage of his daughter.

Congratulations to Brian and Emma

One more stop on the winding road adventure took us further west to Loveland, CO to see our gorgeous niece receive her diploma.
The month flew by! It was time for the Mobile Condo to head east again. She is in storage for a few more months. We enjoyed having the wheels rolling again, but for now we are needed to help out our family in Illinois. The song still plays in our heads🎼🎼🎼
